FAQ

A Cricut machine is a machine, about the size of a desktop printer, that can cut, score, and draw designs on a variety of materials such as cardstock, vinyl, and fabric.

The Richmond Public Library has Cricut Maker 3 machines located at Brighouse, Steveston and Ironwood locations. You can learn, create and edit projects at Brighouse, Steveston and Ironwood on a first-come drop-in basis by logging in with your library card. The Richmond Public Library has Cricut Maker 3 machines.

Cricut Design Space and Inkscape are loaded on the Cricut creation station. There are also quick links to browser-based tools: cuttle, getpaint, and links to free SVG and Cricut project libraries.

You can create personalized items using Cricut Design Space. People are using the Cricut machine to create cards, stickers, t-shirts, mugs and more.

The Cricut Maker can cut a wide variety of materials, including paper, cardstock, vinyl, and light fabrics.

Anyone with a free Full Access Richmond Public Library Card can use our library’s equipment, physical collections, programs and services. Members who wish to create their own custom Cricut designs may use their library card to log in to the Cricut creation station at the library after completing the Cricut Maker 3 Certification. Customers younger than 15 years old cannot get certified yet and should participate with the aid of their guardian or family member 15 years and older that has gotten fully Cricut certified, because the Cricut machine uses small and very sharp blades to cut materials.

The cost depends on the material you use. The library has a small selection of cardstock and/or vinyl materials for the Cricut Maker. Customers can purchase these materials at cost from the library or bring their own. There is no charge for using the Cricut Maker if you bring your own materials. There is a fixed cost for the Print and Cut function for printable sticker sheets or iron-on heat transfer sheets, available only at Brighouse Library, of $5.00 per sheet. This cost includes the sheet and ink.

The time it takes depends on the size and complexity of your project. For some projects you are done pretty much as soon as you peel the material from the mat, other times there is application or assembly left to do. Beginner projects usually take about 2 hours to complete from start to finish.

We’re here to help! However, please note that support during your session is limited, and our staff can only answer basic questions. After completing the certification, you’ll be ready to use the equipment and software needed for your project. If you need extra assistance, feel free to book a 1-on-1 Help session here: https://www.yourlibrary.ca/help1on1
