What is the Public Library Board?

The RPL Board provides governance for one of Richmond’s most used and valued community services. RPL creates opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds to learn, connect and belong. To ensure the realization of these strategic goals, RPL Board responsibilities include approving and developing library governance policies, approving operating and capital budgets, and contributing to the strategic plan for inclusive, innovative and responsive library service. The Board also plays a critical role in lobbying and advocating for the resources required to fulfill the mission and vision of the library. The RPL Board is legislated under the provincial Library Act. City Council makes citizen appointments to the RPL Board. Appointments consist of two-year terms (from January 1 to December 31), for a maximum of eight consecutive years.

What is the time commitment?

As community volunteers, Board trustees commit a minimum of 10-15 hours per month for Board-related activities, including preparation for and participation in meetings and community events. The Board has 10 regular meetings per year and additional meetings are scheduled as needed.
